Great British Cycle Rides – No. 1 Cycling The Worcester and Birmingham Canal. Threaded throughout the country are veins of water that are often secluded and are always calm and tranquil. There are no cars, no crowds of people. You can walk or cycle alongside them and it can be miles before you see another person. Usually it’s just you and the ducks, the swans, the moorhens and the odd heron. Sometimes you can hear a Plop! sound as a fish breaks the surface of the water. These veins of water are the canals. Originally built for transporting goods, canals helped usher in the Industrial Revolution before being superseded by rail and road networks. A period of decline and then neglect followed, and for a time it seemed that canals would be confined to history, a dead icon of a bygone Golden Age. Thankfully, interest in canals has been reignited by major redevelopments and by the burgeoning leisure industry, and today they thrive once more. The Worcester and Birmingham Canal, the subject of this book, is 30 miles long and winds its way through two cities, miles of open countryside, suburbia, industrialisation and farmland. It meanders under two different motorways and sometimes runs directly parallel to the main rail line down to Plymouth. It also contains a staggering 58 locks, most of them concentrated around the infamous Tardebigge, all necessary to negotiate the 428ft of elevation between the start and end cities. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the route is that there are four significant points where tunnels cut through the guts of the English countryside and the towpath disappears completely, throwing the hapless walker / cyclist off the path with no instruction as to how they should rejoin the canal further along. In this book, everything you need to know to complete the route on foot or by bike will be included. Hopefully it will inspire you to make a similar journey.
