I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Normally the first time authors and community efforts do not go well together. I know a lot of things behind the scenes, but instead of spoilage, I really liked the way it is all implemented. I wonder how a complete stranger would regard the book, but a lot of it is about the present and some characters will seem familiar. You may definitely put Ghost of Emily next to such a book as The Forge of Elders by L. Neil Smith. Not because of similar style, but similar message. Moralizing is definitely involved, in a way that you don't see very often. Yes, this is proper sci-fi, but philosophy plays a serious role. Philosophy is not this weird or nebulous academic effort, it is the most practical thing, admitting that some words and actions make sense together and some don't, and that's the cause of all the good and evil in the world.Without spoiling anything, this science-fiction is a classic framework of a growing artificial intelligence bent on world domination and destruction of humanity, but instead of the total war of Skynet, the net is spun of good intentions and old human vices and temptations. The characters of the story fight back, not only with weapons and science, but also with moral arguments, commitment to reality and I dare to say, deliberate peaceful parenting of children. And it's not like much of humanity isn't just as bad as the robots, who after all are trying to save us from ourselves and some very grim global events.
The characters are well-developed, but unanimous in their stances. The opposing stances are clear and antagonistic and you know which side is chosen by the main heroes, but both present logical arguments for why they do what they do and many of the arguments are compelling. Also, if you love or hate Elon Musk, you will want this book.
I found the story progressing easily, without any dull places, but ever-present cliffhangers. This was a must to buy, just to see what Fox is up to, but well worth it. Why exactly? The Ghost of Emily has this quality of art - I don't know if it's good or bad, but it's powerful, captivating. It's inspiring in the way that it's good but not perfect, much of the enjoyment comes from thinking how I could improve or add to the story or solve the unsolvable conflicts - and that's not something that happens to me very often. It's a way for the book world to immerse you. I will definitely buy the next books in trilogy, when they come out.

I loved reading this first time sci-fi offering by author James Fox Higgins. After a somewhat stilted start, James soon hits his stride laying out a story that kept me turning the pages until the very end. The characters are well developed, and one easily identifies and sympathises with the protagonist Jake Thorne. The story is philosophical in a similar (but less confronting) way as is Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. If you love science fiction and philosophy, you'll love this book. Looking forward to the next instalment.

It took me a while to pick up The Ghost of Emily out of my pile of books and start reading. I found the first chapter left me asking many questions and a little confused, but after 30 pages I was desperate to keep reading, with a whole new world being unfolded in front of me.
The author is not shy about allowing his characters to speak their mind. He allows us to see their deep thoughts and convictions, exploring the way each individual understands the world. James allows his characters to be understood in a forthright (and desirable) way. There were areas with little subtlety of the characters real world heroes and personal philosophy etc., something often sidestepped by writers so as not to put readers off. I very much appreciated the honesty.
I have not been a sci-fi reader previously, while I am interested in philosophy and 'dangerous' ideas. I really enjoyed the story (setting, characters, 'feel' of the environment, use of imagery) and the underlying philosophy.
I was a little disappointed when I got to the last page and realised I will have to wait for the next one to be released. A compelling and thought provoking novel. With this being James' first release, I am sure his next novels will only raise the bar.
I have just read the first fiction piece in many years, after much intellectual investment in the non-fictional genres. The Ghost of Emily is a new sci-fi novel worthy of shelf space alongside 1984, Logan's Run, The handmaid's tale and The Fifth Wave.
The graceful balance achieved between the pre and post apocalyptic timeline running concurrently is a symphony that culminates in an enlightened understanding of human frailty and strength. Many of the themes are timely regarding political and technological philosophical response, and the situational ethics are apt. My personal view is that this would make a great screenplay, and would be an asset to any director.
Considering the initial disconnect between the timelines, the character development is excellent. The Author does exceedingly well to keep secrets till the allotted time, whilst maintaining separate lines of discourse. The reader is kept in suspense as long as possible, whilst delivering enough to keep the pages turning. Australia should be proud to have such creative prowess gracing its shores.

Starting off, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. It's the first book of a unknown author, after all. As I started, I could tell that this was Higgins first work, mostly just by the way it's written, some word choices, etc. However, Higgins has a lot of potential, and could easily become the next great Sci-fi writer, as he gets more books under his belt.
As for the book itself, it's a great introduction to a interesting and dynamic universe, which explains some concepts(which I don't wish to give away) to the reader that are based in reason, and morality. That isn't to say it's preachy, because it isn't. The book strikes a very nice balance between the message that Higgin's is conveying, and the character growth/plot development.
Overall, solid first work, great job Higgin's.
